Lesson Flow (40–45 minutes)
1. Opening Prompt (5 minutes) Students respond in writing:
“What kinds of work does society usually label as ‘genius’? Who decides?”
Brief sharing to surface assumptions.
2. Guided Discussion (10–15 minutes)
Focus questions:
- Why earlier eras rewarded abstraction and disciplinary depth
- Why modern systems reward embedded, relational work
- How faster feedback changes responsibility and risk
Emphasize system conditions, not individual merit.
3. Small-Group Activity (10 minutes)
Assign one system per group (examples):
- public health
- climate policy
- education
- digital platforms
Each group answers:
- Where does innovation matter most here?
- Where does maintenance or repair matter more?
- Which kind of work is more visible or rewarded?
Groups report one insight.
4. Synthesis Discussion (5 minutes)
Prompt: “If recognition shapes aspiration, what happens when maintenance work is invisible?”

- Short reflective essay: “Is modern genius harder to recognize than earlier forms? Why?”
- Systems map: Diagram how recognition, incentives, institutions, and feedback interact.
