When Systems Manufacture Self-Interest
We usually treat selfishness as a fixed fact about people. This essay argues that systems do not just reveal self-interest, they help produce it, and then point to the behavior as proof they were right all along.
Self-interest is often treated as a starting point.
A given. A constant. A fixed property of human behavior.
Systems are designed around it. Markets assume it. Policies anticipate it.
But this framing hides something more consequential:
Self-interest is not just assumed.
It is shaped.
From Assumption to Production
In theory, systems respond to behavior.
In practice, they train it.
A system that rewards individual gain over collective outcome does not simply reveal self-interest.
It amplifies it.
A system that penalizes cooperation does not merely discourage it.
It makes cooperation costly.
Over time, the distinction disappears.
What began as an assumption becomes a pattern. What became a pattern becomes a norm. What became a norm begins to feel like human nature itself.
The Feedback Loop
This is not accidental.
It is structural.
Systems operate through feedback:
- behaviors are rewarded or punished
- actors adapt
- patterns stabilize
- expectations harden
And then:
The system points to the resulting behavior as proof that its assumptions were correct.
People are self-interested. See how they act.
But the system helped produce the behavior it now explains.
Narrowing the Definition of Interest
There is a second, quieter move.
Systems often narrow what counts as self-interest.
They translate complex human motivations into simpler, measurable forms:
- money
- output
- performance metrics
- short-term gain
What cannot be easily measured is often ignored.
Belonging becomes secondary. Meaning becomes invisible. Long-term consequences become abstract.
Over time, actors adapt not just their behavior—but their sense of what matters.
Self-interest shrinks to fit the system.
When Alignment Becomes Extraction
At first, this can look like efficiency.
Clear incentives. Predictable behavior. Optimized outcomes.
But there is a turning point.
When systems reward extraction— of value, of attention, of time— self-interest becomes aligned with depletion.
Actors succeed by taking more. Systems reward those who do. And the pattern accelerates.
No individual actor needs to intend harm.
The system makes harmful behavior rational.
The Disappearance of Alternatives
One of the most powerful effects is not what systems create— but what they erase.
If cooperation is not rewarded, it becomes rare. If trust is not supported, it becomes fragile. If long-term thinking is penalized, it becomes irrational.
Eventually:
People stop imagining other ways of acting.
Self-interest, in its narrow form, begins to feel inevitable.
Not because it is the only way humans can behave— but because it is the only way the system allows them to succeed.
Systems That Expand Self-Interest
This is not the only possible outcome.
Some systems do the opposite.
They expand what self-interest includes.
They make it rational to:
- cooperate
- invest in long-term outcomes
- care about shared resources
- act with restraint
In these systems, self-interest does not disappear.
It becomes broader.
More aligned with collective well-being.
More durable over time.
The Design Question
So the question is not:
Do people act in their own self-interest?
The question is:
What kind of self-interest does this system produce?
And:
What behaviors does it make rational?
Because systems do not just reveal who we are.
They participate in who we become.
Conclusion: The Quiet Manufacture
Self-interest is not a fixed input into systems.
It is, in part, an output.
Shaped by incentives. Refined by feedback. Stabilized by repetition.
And often mistaken for something more permanent than it is.
To understand a system, you must look not only at what it assumes about people—
But at what it teaches them to be.
