In the United States, we know enough about brain injury to reduce harm dramatically. And yet, year after year, we continue to expose children and teenagers to predictable neurological risk — then act surprised when the consequences surface decades later.
This is not a failure of science. It is not a failure of medicine. It is a failure of design.
At the center of that failure sits a powerful American idea: rugged individualism — the belief that strength is proven by endurance, that pain is a private test of character, and that risk is something a person chooses rather than something a system creates.
Nowhere is this tension clearer than in high school sports.
WHAT WE GET WRONG ABOUT BRAIN INJURY
Most public discussion of brain injury still revolves around concussions — dramatic hits, visible symptoms, return-to-play decisions. Those moments matter. But they are only the most visible edge of a much larger problem.
