The result is a society that is constantly talking, rarely listening, and perpetually tired. The Psychology of Helplessness The American Psychological Association and the Journal of Medical Internet Research have documented the costs of this design. Doom scrolling correlates with increased anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep. But beyond the metrics lies something more subtle: learned helplessness. The endless stream of crises—climate, conflict, pandemic, politics—creates an illusion of participation (“I’m keeping up”) while eroding agency (“I can’t change any of it”).
